As Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights (PCHR) I was part of the inquiry into Freedom of Speech. After over 400 submissions and 11,000 responses, the majority report of the Committee did NOT recommend changes to the Racial Discrimination Act (RDA).
Despite no recommendation being made to change the RDA, the Turnbull Government introduced a Bill to water down the current protections in that Act. The Senate has voted down those changes, but the government has not resiled from their policy. Many government MPs and Senators are still calling for Section 18C of the RDA to be repealed or watered down.
I’d like to invite you to a forum on this topic to discuss the current legal processes, racial discrimination in contemporary contexts and why standards are so important across our society. I’ll be joined on the panel by federal parliamentary colleagues and representatives from multicultural communities across Brisbane’s southside.
- The Hon Mark Dreyfus QC MP, Shadow Attorney-General
- Terri Butler MP, Member for Griffith
- Galila Abdelsalam, Director, Islamic Women’s Association of Queensland
- Protais Muhirwa, Founder, Active Refugee & Migrant Integration in Australia
I look forward to seeing you there!
