As Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights (PCHR). This Committee has five Liberal MPs and Senators. I note that our recent report did NOT recommend changing the Racial Discrimination Act.
However, today Malcolm Turnbull and his government have chosen to ignore this report handed down only three weeks ago, today.
Malcolm Turnbull announced today that the Government will change Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act – a law that has protected multicultural Australia from racism for decades.
This change will achieve only one thing – an Australia that allows, and a government that condones, more racist hate speech.
The PHRC heard from over 11,000 Australians during the Inquiry, and heard the views of multicultural Australia loud and clear – there should be no change to Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act.
On Harmony Day, Malcolm Turnbull is trading away protections for Australia’s multicultural communities in order to keep the support of the right wing of his party.
Labor’s position is firm and united – we do not support any change to the law. We will fight now, and for as long as necessary.
We can’t do it alone. We need everyone’s help to get Malcolm Turnbull to listen to multicultural Australia. Malcom Turnbull: (02) 6277 7700
